For aparajita's break up poem challenge. Written 6/3/04. At the time I thought this particular crack-up really sucked. Now I think *I* was the one smoking the crack. Heh.

Today,
at the height of the heat,
I walk up to the foothills in the 92 degrees
of near-perfect
to check in on the prickly pear and sand
sage
and help along
the inevitable skin cancer.

Upon getting back
I read the next expected "Sorry but it's not
gonna work"
email.
Gotta love the Internet -
new and improved ways
to be a jerk,
better techniques for being a bitch,
newer better faster ways
to break up which cost even less
than a drink.

I briefly considered replying with the
reliable "I was two-timing you anyway"
email
(true in this case)
but thought better of it
because there's enough hurt out there
without adding any.
So instead I go outside in the sublime late-
afternoon air
and take a picture of the exquisite
desert millipede on the wall
before killing it
with the bug spray.
