"Almost uniquely among developed nations" is pretty true. France, for instance,
has a 35 hour work week. The US is the only developed country that
doesn't mandate any vacation time for workers (even Japan mandates a
couple days). I gained an extra week of vacation per year when I
went to work for a British company, and the Brits are not exactly the
most easygoing work culture.
Another way of reclaiming the time freed by productivity gains is to surf the net at work.
Do Europeans spend less time slacking at work than Americans?
Like Homer says: "If you don't like your job you don't strike. You just go in every day and do it really half-assed. That's the American way."
